What is pharmaceutical GLP-1?

Pharmaceutical "GLP-1", by comparison, is vastly and fundamentally different from natural GLP-1. In the most technical sense, the term "GLP-1" on its own refers to the GLP-1 hormone that is naturally produced in animals. When a pharmaceutical company uses the term "GLP-1" on its own in its branding, without qualifiers like "synthetic" or "engineered", it is technically misleading.
"Pharmaceutical GLP-1" is not an endogenous hormone, it is a synthetic analogue that pretends to be natural GLP-1 by attaching itself directly to GLP-1 receptors throughout the body. This process or phenomenon, where a molecule binds itself to a cellular receptor in order to activate it and trigger biological responses, is called receptor agonism, and the molecule is called a receptor agonist. Therefore, "pharmaceutical GLP-1" can be more accurately described as a synthetic GLP-1 receptor agonist (often abbreviated GLP-1RA in scientific literature)—an imitation hormone engineered to activate the same biological actions in the body as natural GLP-1.
